SECOND MONTH OF PRAYERS
CONTINUED
Yahweh (often identified as Jehovah or Lord in modern translations)
is a God Who is protective and nurturing in His dealings with His
people.

However, His people often can not believe this.  As Saint Julian of
Norwich, 14th century mystic, pointed out,  "Some of us believe that
God is almighty and can do everything; and that he is all-wise and
may do everything; but that he is all-love and will do everything
---there we draw back.  As I see it, this is the greatest of all hindrances
to God's lovers."

Saint Augustine has the answer for those who doubt that the
Almighty is our safe haven, "Christ came chiefly for this reason:
that man might learn how much God loved him."

So let us adopt the attitude of Proverbs  29: " He who putteth  his
trust in the Lord shall be safe."   Let us respond to  our own doubts
and to the doubts of others with the words of Jeremiah, the prophet,
who was often beset by doubts regarding God's mercy:
       Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed,
       Because His compassions fail not.
       They are new every morning;
       Great is Your faithfulness.
       "The Lord is my portion, says my soul,
       Therefore I hope in Him!"

Doubts are abolished; joy takes their place; now we firmly believe
that God is our safe haven:
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
My soul shall be joyful in my God;
For he has clothed me with the garments of salvation.
He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.
As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its bud,
As the garden causes the things that are sown in it
  to spring forth,
So  the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
   to spring forth.

JAMES 1:22
Ceaseless interior prayer is a yearning of the human spirit toward God.
To succeed in this consoling exercise we must pray more often to God to
teach us to pray without ceasing.  Pray more, and pray more frequently.
It is prayer itself which will reveal to you how it can be achieved unceasingly;
but it will take some time.
